It wasn’t a hard thing to believe. The Myans predicted it, it had been warned of in the stars. All prophecies revolved around it. From ancient Egypt to the Revelation of the Apostle Paul. The end of the human race as you and I know it. Though, no one could expect that something as numerous as disease would do it. It was the year 2010. On a covert mission to the deepest levels of the ocean, a marine biotical team dove deep under the surface. Their goal? Harvest a new life form that some believed would cure cancer. Essentially, they were slugs, able to survive in the ocean’s most hostile plain: the abyss. They were shipped all over the world, a chemical they secreted would kill cancer cells. Doctors ran through many trials, and finally moved on to human interaction. It was a world-wide miracle. No one in the world had cancer any longer. But, they could never foresee what terrible horror they had unleashed upon humanity.
Once injected into the human blood stream, the chemical mutated, and lay dormant until a stimulus activated it. Then, it became acidic, melting through the viscera and eating away at their flesh. The chemical became airborne, and soon, it had spread to every continent on the globe. It seemed unstoppable and, in truth, it was. The world’s population was dwindling, consumed in a virus that could not be contained. In a desperate attempt to contain it, the world powers went wild with nuclear radiation. All effects of the virus had gone, but the damage was done. The only humans left were already infected. Those who weren’t soon died off without adequate medical care. The world experienced a stillness unlike it had seen for many thousands of years.
In a world without humans, the animals were back on top. Tigers and Lions and other wild animals that had once been held in zoos escaped, and run, undisturbed and uncontained, through the biggest cities, finding a new hope in the silence of the world. One of these wild animals, the wolf, benefited the most from the disappearance of humanity. They moved into the abandoned cities and towns, evolved to enlightenment, and were now at the top of the food chain. The chemical that had proved to be the doom for humanity had now become the blessing of the wolves. Instead of killing them off, it altered them. They mutated, and now had power far beyond comprehension. Some can see the future, some can cast illusions, and others can even control the natural elements of the earth.
Two packs in particular, Viectum and Lunare, are who this tale revolves around. The wolves of Viectum embrace their powers, living in the very city where the human population had been most dominate. What was once New York City is now Viectum City, and is run by the Viectum pack and their alphas. The Lunare pack, on the other hand, suppressed their powers, and it is considered a crime punishable by death to use them. Though, by suppressing their powers, they have nearly lost all of them. Only a glimmer of what had originally enlightened them is left. They live as far out away from Viectum City as possible, clinging to the wild and true nature of the wolf.
Even so, danger still exists in the world, and the fact that these creatures survive in such a hostile place is a miracle in itself. Will they be able to overcome their differences, and live in peace? Or will the vast trench between them drive them to the same fate as the humans? For now, that question remains unanswered. But this new world is unforgiving, and a courage is needed, as deep as the oceans from which the chemical had been harvested.
